Be Unreasonable – Part 1

When we were kids, we had huge dreams of doing amazing things. In our minds, nothing was impossible, and the sky truly was the limit. Over time, however, our dreams began to fade. They shrank because of the voices in our lives that started to speak to us and encourage us to be more reasonable with our dreams and expectations. They spoke very loudly and clearly, “You can’t do that. You’re not smart enough,” Or “You’re not tall enough.”

In time, we started to listen to those voices to be more reasonable, and we accepted their thoughts as our reality. We began to settle into a safe, average life, and we became okay with it.

Many of you may be feeling very uncomfortable right now, because you happen to be one of those who listened to those voices around you and given up your dreams to settle for average.

Why have we settled for average?

1. Average, for most people, ends up being a safe place. You’re right in the middle, and most people don’t criticize average. As a result of settling, many of us live safe and predictable lives.

2. If I choose to excel beyond average, it will draw attention. With that attention comes more responsibility, and I don’t really want to work that hard or put in the effort that will be required.

3. When I’m average, people don’t have expectations of me. There’s not a lot of pressure to live up to any set of expectations.

Were we created for more?

We were created to make a difference and to make the world a better place.

Ephesians 2:8 says, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” There is nothing average about God—He’s creative, excellent, everywhere at the same time, and He knows everything. It’s time we begin to act like the children of God that we are and realize our full potential. He created us as masterpieces to bring change to this world. We may not be able to change it by the millions, but we can change it by 5 people or 10 people.

Advancement requires an unreasonable person.

Two people who became unreasonable are the Wright brothers. They wanted to change the world and were convinced that they could get an airplane up into the air. Many voices around them were telling them that they were crazy. They frequently heard voices say, “You’re going to kill someone,” and, “Humans weren’t meant to fly.”

But they were determined and on December 17, 1903, they were successful in getting the first airplane off the ground. Orville Wright said, “If we all worked on the assumption that what is accepted as true is really true, there would be little hope of advance.”

Have you given up on your dreams? Do you feel stuck in an average, predictable life?

Become unreasonable! Don’t conform to those around you and don’t listen to their negative or cautionary words that encourage you to play it safe.

George Bernard Shaw said, “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself; therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable person.”

Advancement requires an unreasonable person.

You can write that novel,
make that movie,
start that church,
or launch that business.

How do we become unreasonable and change the world? Stay tuned for Part 2.
